Many Iterations of Excellence: A History of Our Firm

The origin of Schlemlein Goetz Fick & Scruggs dates back nearly three decades and is built upon the rock solid foundation established by our predecessors, including founding partner David Schiffrin. Mr. Schiffrin formed Bryan, Schiffrin & McMonagle in 1986, establishing a tightly focused construction claim and litigation practice in the First & Cedar Building in Belltown, Seattle. Five years later, Jim Hopkins joined the firm, adding a specialist in surety law. In 1993, Robert Olson brought an expertise in public works litigation, and the firm changed its name to Schiffrin Hopkins & Olson.

In 1996, looking to increase its real estate development and transaction practice, the firm lured Garth Schlemlein and Theresa Goetz to its ranks, launching Schiffrin Olson Schlemlein & Hopkins. SOSH would remain in Belltown until 2002 when we moved to the 25th Floor of the Westlake Center Tower in downtown Seattle. We would remain in the Westlake Tower a decade, when the current partners, Garth Schlemlein, Theresa Goetz, Jim Fick and Michael Scruggs, seeking a more easily accessible location for our clients, built our current offices in the Commerce Building of the fast emerging and vibrant SODO District just a mile from CenturyLink and Safeco Fields, home of the Seahawks and Seattle Mariners.
